Saturday on first weekend of riding
Notice the luggage doors along the bottom of the bus. The last slightly open door is a larger compartment and is where the bike was stored.
Start of ride for Sunday on the first weekend. Bicycle and backpack is on the ground bottom left of the picture. Someone travelling around by bicycle was a fascination but the Fijians were very polite
.
This dairy farming family invited me in for morning tea when I took a wrong turn. They saved me from being caught out in a tropical storm.
Towards the end of the second days ride on Kings Road
I worked at Lami for five days. Lami proved a convenient spot to start a ride each morning before breakfast.
The bus journey up the Singatoka valley started in the rich plains around Singatoka. This was Saturday the first day of the second weekend of riding.
These children had been doing the family marketing at Singatoka and were returning home.
The route continued along the Singatoka valley beside the river for about 45 km
Eventually the road climbs away from the river heading for the intersection with the Ba road before returning to river level at Keiyasi.
Where the road to Ba meets the road to Keiyasi I left the bus and started to ride up into the Nausouri Highlands. This was Saturday on the second weekend.
By the time I got settled with Teresa and Peni, and freshened up in the outside showers dusk was settling. Their children took me on a tour of the village and it was dark by the time we returned.
Teresa, Peni and the author drinking kava after dinner. After five days of drinking kava after work and even at lunch time, I had the taste for a session of kava drinking with my hosts and their friends.
Sunday morning of the second weekend I departed from Bukaya. Building to the left of the picture is the outside open fire kitchen.
In the centre of the picture is the traditional Bure of the village chief. The power lines can be seen as the village was in the process of having a mini hydro electric scheme installed. The vehicle in the foreground provides transport most days to the markets in Nandi.
In the foreground is the school and in the centre is the chiefs Bure. Behind the photographer outside the village is a hostel which provides accommodation for adventure tourists.
